As the race for the Premier League top four gets hotter and intense, Certainly, there is still a lot to play for, especially for the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool and Arsenal in the race for Top 4 places in the English Premier League in the closing quarter of the 2016/2017 season and, consequently, a place in the Champions League next season.
While Tottenham continues to mount pressure on Chelsea for the Premier League title, 3rd and 4th place in the Premier League are still up for grabs for those teams who want it most. Let’s take a look at the teams in contention for a Top 4 place and their chances to succeed in achieving this feat.
With Liverpool sitting currently in the 3rd position with 66 points from 34 games having four games to go. The Reds could not strengthen their stay in the top 4 with a disappointing home defeat to crystal Palace in the lower half of the table last weekend. They (Liverpool) stand to lose their position to the Manchester teams if the duo wins their remaining outstanding matches. The Manchester City are in 4th place with 65 points having played 33 matches followed closely with Manchester United in 5th position with 64 points also from 33 matches. Arsenal is in the 6th position after 32 games with 60 points.
Many football pundits already predicted Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City to occupy the top 4 spots without Manchester United and Arsenal. but it is believed that top 4 is the birthright of Arsenal if the Gunners fails to make Champions League qualification this season, then, it will be their first time in 21 years. Manchester United are considered to secure Champions League qualification only via European Cup glory but Jose Mourinho’s team may get that through the normal process which is to book a top 4 spot.
Is Liverpool going to hold on to the top 4 or continue to struggle with teams in the lower half of the table with their remaining fixtures with the smaller teams? Jurgen Klopp is hopeful his side will stay gum to the Champions League qualification spot.
