Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk believes they have the ability and numbers to challenge on all fronts this season after helping his side progress in the Champions League at Anfield.

A pulsating second half saw the Reds come out 1-0 winners to eliminate Napoli and seal a place in the knockout stages.

With another big game the horizon on Sunday against rivals Manchester United, Van Dijk is confident his team-mates can cope with the demands.

“You want to play these games and at the highest level. It’s fantastic to be in the Champions League knockout stages and the Premier League is fantastic. We need to enjoy it and give everything. Physically we can manage it. We are fit players and we work hard and we have a big squad.

“In the end it was pretty tough. We totally deserved the win and should have scored a couple more goals. In the end the save is massive for us from Alisson. That is why he is there. He’s fantastic and helps you through it.

“He is having a fantastic season. We all have I think. We are unbeaten in the league and through in the Champions League. Obviously we could have played better in the Champions League this season. Hopefully from now on we hit second gear.”

Liverpool joined three other teams from England in the last 16 for the second season in a row.

The former Southampton man looks to it as a sign of the strength of the league.

“I think the Premier League is the best league in the world. It was always a dream for me to come here. To see how good the English teams are doing the last two seasons is a good sign.

“Personally for us we hope to come as far as we did last year and hopefully win. This is always a dream for any player.”
