Yagazie Emezi is a proud Aba girl, popular blogger, artist, and all around creative with a passion for African preservation. She is known for her opinionated, and sometimes controversial, YouTube videos, her hilarious personal cartoons, and her well-curated tumblr
Yagazie Emezi was born and raised in Nigeria. Her mother is Malaysian but she chooses to identify predominately with being Nigerian.
She is being a naturalista for over nine years. After her hair was permed for about a year before she shaved off all her hair for school, went bald for four years before she started growing it out again.
Describing her hair, she said:
“It is a constant, stubborn mess. I do have a lot of hair but the individual strands are very thin so my hair is extremely sensitive to heat. I do have problems with split-ends but apart from that, my hair is easy to manage but maybe that’s because I’m just used to it!”
On her hair regime, she said:
“I comb my hair only in the shower when wet and once I get out, I apply my hair product with my hair still damp then I do the two strand twist, bantu knot it up and then wrap it up to dry overnight, then the next morning, I release it all braids play a very important role in my hair growth and I’m forever looking for new styles to keep my hair.”
Her field of work:
She is double major in cultural anthropology and africana studies, a poet and an artist.
On her fashion style, she said:
It’s hard for me to describe it since my fashion style is drawn from so many things and people around me. I suppose I could call it ‘bold’? I get stared at quite a bit for what I wear but that is because I live in albuquerque right now so it takes guts on my part to simply step out wearing what I feel comfortable in.
Bottom line, I am a free-spirit and an artist my art is not just what my mind puts into creation but what my body does as well. It is such a pity that not everyone is brave enough to express themselves because they simply worry too much about how they will be perceived and when that worry eventually turns into fear, most become lost and settle within the shadow of their true selves people worry too much about the opinions of strangers.
What inspires her:
Yagazie draws her inspiration from everywhere. She never believes people who say that their inspiration is drawn from their own imagination, “as you must be one heck of an individual to do that yourself”. Her inspiration mainly comes from home- it comes from her childhood and the environment she grew up in.
