Monkeypox Virus Hits 6 More States In Nigeria

Monkeypox viral disease was first reported in Bayelsa, about a week ago but recently, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control(NCDC) has announced that 31 suspected cases of monkeypox virus have so far been reported in 6 more states across the country.

The disease is zoonotic and can be caused by handling of infected monkeys, rats and squirrels and rodents are the major reservoir of the virus.

In addition to Bayelsa, Rivers, Ekiti, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Ogun and Cross Rivers have been listed as the states with suspected cases of the viral disease. National Coordinator/Chief Executive Officer of NCDC, Dr. Ihekweazu mentioned that it is very unlikely that these cases are all monkeypox but samples have been transported for laboratory confirmation.

Please practice proper hygiene.
