Following the news of Selena Gomez and her battle with Lupus, here are ways to prevent having Lupus. Lupus is an incurable and usually “life long” immune system illness which is mainly suffered by women and can affect any part of the body, including skin, joints and organs.
It’s difficult to know exactly how many people suffer but women and people of African-Caribbean, Chinese and Asian descent are more likely to develop the condition than white people.
To avoid Lupus;
• Eat a Healthy Diet
Just by eating the right food alone, you can already prevent inflammation, which is a major symptom of lupus. A healthy diet can also promote proper-functioning organs and an overall healthy body, which can improve your overall mood, too.
Take note that when it comes to eating healthy, be sure to purchase from certified organic providers. This way, you can be sure that what you are eating is free from harmful chemicals such as pesticides, or antibiotics.
Regular exercise can help build your stamina, manage your weight and improve your mood. Be sure to consult with your doctor on what exercises you can do, as your lupus-affected organs can prevent you from doing certain physical movements.
• Take Supplements
These are a good way of adding nutritional value to your diet and can even help lower inflammation throughout your body. Supplements such as krill oil have nutrients that can improve your cardiovascular health through regular intake.
Preventing Attacks If You Already Have Lupus
If you’re already diagnosed with lupus, there are several steps you can take to prevent it from flaring up. The same advice that applies to people who don’t have lupus works in this case, but there are added pointers such as:
• Sun Protection
Ultraviolet rays from the sun are a well-known trigger of lupus, so avoiding sunlight exposure is your top priority. But if you need to travel outdoors, it’s best to cover yourself up with clothing such as hats and long-sleeved shirts. You can also use a safe sunscreen for added protection.
• Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)
Lupus can make you feel down, which can affect your treatment’s success and overall well-being. It’s important to practice positive, self-reaffirming methods such as EFT to keep your spirits up. EFT works by applying pressure on specific meridian points in your head and chest while saying affirmation statements. The concept is similar to acupuncture, but without the need for needles.
Lupus can weaken your bones because of fatigue and the resulting inactivity it brings to your body. Taking medications can also weaken your bones as a side effect of treating lupus.1 To counteract this, consume calcium-rich foods, such as grass-fed raw milk, which it allows you to reap the benefits of milk as nature intended it to be, without any harmful chemicals. Taking a calcium supplement, along with vitamins D3 and K2, is also recommended.
Bad Practices to Avoid
• Smoking: increases your risk for cardiovascular disease, which can worsen your lupus symptoms and cause other complications.
• Alcohol: reduces the effectiveness of your medication, and can prevent you from getting a good night’s rest.
• Alfalfa: consumption of alfalfa is reported to increase lupus attacks due to the L-canavanine amino acid found in it. It’s best not to consume this food in any form.
